Lao Community Mennonite Church fonds. — [ca. 1995]. — 24 photographs
The Calgary Thai-Lao Community Mennonite Church formed in 1979 from 15 Laotian refugee families who were sponsored by First Mennonite Church. The church worshiped in the First Mennonite Church building in Calgary and was initially led by Lloyd Oppel. The congregation then moved to Abbeydale Christian Community Church to be geographically closer to its parishioners. It formally was founded on July 13, 1999 as The Lao Community Mennonite Church. The language of worship is Lao. The people in the church were from a poor, farming background. Many worked night-shift at a meat packing plant. In 1988 there were 12 members. By 2012, the congregation was still small, but active. By then, it was meeting at Highland MB Church in Calgary and was affiliated with the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches.
