Events

We are actively trying to move our meetings around so that we become familiar with the different parts of Alberta where there are Mennonite concentrations.

  • Saturday October 29, 2011 - The Mennonite Historical Society of Alberta Fall Conference will be held at the Bergthal Mennonite Church, Didsbury, Alberta.
    • Morning session
      • some history of the Didsbury area
      • history of the Didsbury Mennonite Church
      • Jim Lore, a local historian,will speak on the topic Mennonites as seen in the Community Mirror
    • Afternoon session
      • memorial service
      • reflection for the 25th Anniversary of the Bergthal Mennonite Church
      • author Tena Friesen will introduce her book, Pushing Through Invisible Barriers, a Canadian Mennonite Story.
    • The registration is $10 which includes the lunch payable at the Conference.

  • Saturday October 22, 2011 - 1pm Workshop: Using Brother's Keeper and the GRANDMA Database well - Harold Friesen
    • Your learning will be greatest if you can bring your own laptop and follow along with Harold. He will demonstrate using his computer and a projection onto the wall.  He will also try and help individuals as time permits.  This will be a relaxed time of playing with GRANDMA data on Brother's Keeper.
    • Please advise when you register if you do not have BK or GRANDMA loaded on your computer at this time - we may need to meet earlier that day so we can get it loaded.
    • There is no fee, but you must register (spots are limited to 15 participants). To register, you can call 403 250 1121 on Thursdays (10:00am - 4:00pm) or email us at

  • May 7, 2011, 1:30-4:30pm Workshop: Using Brother's Keeper and the GRANDMA Database well - Harold Friesen.

      • formatting BK to facilitate searches and record changes
      • finding "missing" data on GRANDMA - something that is in the database, just not "connected" to my tree
      • "fixing" two different fathers?  or mothers? or other slips of my "mouse"
      • finding out if I' m I related to "you". Are we still cousins if we get divorced?  Or am I my own grandpa?

  • November 20, 2010 - The MHSA will hold its Fall Conference entitled "From Paraguay to Uzbekistan" on Saturday, November 20, at 1:00pm at First Mennonite Church, 3650-91 Street, Edmonton. Guest speakers will include Vince Friesen, David Toews, Menno Klassen, and Colin Neufeldt. All are welcome to attend: Members and Non-Members.

  • 2007 Oct 28 (Sun) - Book Celebration – First Mennonite Church Calgary
    The Mennonite Historical Society of Alberta (MHSA) will be celebrating the publication of the book by Irene Klassen, entitled:  Their Mark: Their Legacy.  It is a collection of over 50 biographical essays on Alberta Mennonite leaders from assorted walks of life.  Come join MHSA and First Mennonite Church members to hear Irene read a few passages, sign a copy and celebrate its publication. There will be some refreshments on hand but no fee.  There will be an opportunity to purchase an MHSA membership, Mennonite books, or make a donation to the MHSA.

  • 2007 Oct 20 (Sat) - 9:00 am Fall Gathering of MHSA Members and Friends – Linden, Alberta
    The MHSA invites you to its annual fall gathering.   From 9 am - noon, we will hear about the history of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite (Holdeman) and the Mennonite Brethren Church in the Linden area.

    Following lunch, participants may either join the Linden quilters or a group doing some local touring.  For more information, or to register for this gathering, please contact Colin Neufeldt (780-433-2127), Lloyd Ratzlaff (403-546-3788) or Henry Goertzen (403-335-8414).   There will be a small fee for lunch and an opportunity to purchase an MHSA membership, Mennonite books, or make a donation to the MHSA.

    This event in being held in conjunction with the Mysteries of Grace and Judgment event which is scheduled for that evening.

    • Arthur Kroeger will introduce his new family history book - Arthur was born in Alberta, was a Rhodes scholar, retired senior Canadian Government deputy minister and former Chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa.
    • The evening also includes coffee and desserts catered by First Mennonite Church
    • There will be an opportunity to buy an autographed book and donate to MHSA.
