From the place where the family lived at the time the name was given.

Name: Lehmann/Leemann
Place: Lehn
Meaning: renter
Name in America: Lehman/Layman
Heimat: Langnau, Canton Bern; Schlosswil, Canton Bern; Worb, Canton Bern

The name "Lehman" was prominent in the Salem congregation at Tofield,  Alberta. When the congregation at Mayton, Alberta (east of Olds) went  defunct in 1918, a number of families moved from Mayton to Tofield.  John K Lehman came with his family. [He] was an ordained man and  became one of the preachers in Salem.
